This is a list of vocabulary we will be using in class along with definitions. You are expected to know each of them by the end of the class.

Aggregator – a tool which gathers information for you
Application - the software/program you are using
Audio - the sound part of a project
Blog – an online diary
Browser- the tool that accesses the internet – explorer, safari, firefox, etc.
Cloud – virtual space to save files
Cursor – the arrow key controlled by the mouse
Cyber Safety – behaving safely online to avoid predators (never giving out personal info or last names)
Database – a collection of information put together by experts
Digital Footprint – what you put online that stays forever
Dock – the task bar
Embed – placing html code into a website to allow the item to show up
Export – to push a file out
Font – the way letters look
Format – type of file that an item is saved in .jpg .tif .pdf mp3 .au
Hover - to hold your mouse over an icon usually for information
ICON – a small image or picture that symbolizes a program or computer item
Import – to bring a file in
Keyboard Shortcuts - key combinations that allow you to do something (Command/shift/4 to take a screen shot on the imacs) instead of navigating the menus
Literacy – the ability to read, write and understand
Media -
Navigate- how to move around and access what you want
Operating System – What the computer uses to run - Windows, Vista, MAC OS, Linux, etc.
Password – the security word required to sign into an account
Pathfinder – resources pulled together for you online to guide your research or exploration
PDF – a file format that anyone can open on any computer
Peripherals – hardware that is connected to the computer – scanner, printer, speakers, etc.
Podcast- a digital audio recording
Primary Source – original document – diary, photograph, sheet music, map
QR code – a scan-able image that brings you to a website
RSS – subscribing to an account which collects posts from a website/blog/newsfeed
Search Engine – an online search tool – Google, Kidsclick, IPL, Yahoo, etc
Software Application – programs that you use on a computer – WORD, EXCEL, AUDACITY, iTUNES, PHOTOBOOTH,
Toolbar – the bar across the top of the screen which contains commands for the open tool
URL- uniform resource locator =- the website address usually in an http://www format
User Name – the name the account is under or setup as
Utilities – tools on the computer to help you do things – (GRAB to take a screenshot)
Video - the moving visual part of a project
Web 1.0 static websites, the old internet in which you looked up information only
Web2.0 – interactive, creative web in which you create and interact online
Widget – a gadget which can be embedded into a website
Window - the screen you are on
Wiki – an online collaborative website
